The Dowlais Male Choir were requested to sing at the wedding of Rebecca Albert and Neil Pilarz. Wedding arrangements were made for their wedding to take place on 23rd May 2015 at the St Tydfil’s Church (Old Parish Church) Merthyr Tydfil. Rebecca’s father Steve Albert and Rebecca’s Uncle, Jonathan Flahery own and run a locally successful building contractors business under the name of Albert& Flaherty LTD.

The choir, under the direction of Darya Brill-Williams and accompanist Michael Jones, entertained Rebecca and Neil’s guests before the wedding service, with a selection of modern and traditional pieces. When the bridal party arrived, the procession was headed by a smart young page boy in a suit with brown brogue shoes, followed by flower girls in white short dresses with pink and white roses around the bottom of their dress. The bridesmaid followed, dressed in a broderie anglaise with lemon colour interspersed throughout the material. Then came the bride Rebecca, who looked radiant being escorted by her father Steve, whose smile indicated a proud moment as they walked down the aisle to bridal march – Loghenrin by Wagner.

After the opening address by Reverend Mark Prevett, the congregation sang “Give Me Joy In My Heart”, followed by the marriage ceremony, the Blessing and the Bible Reading. Reverend Mark Prevett then invited the bride and groom, the parents, and the bridal party to witness the signing of the register.

While the wedding were engaged in the signing of the register the choir sang “Cwm Rhondda”, Let It Be Me” and “Myfanwy”. A bible reading followed along with the second congregational hymn “Calon Lan”, sang by the choir and congregation. After prayers were given the bridal party followed the bride and groom down the aisle to Mendelssohn’s Wedding March. Choir musical director Darya Brill-Williams also played the organ for the wedding service.

Rebecca and Neil Pilarz were the second couple to be married at St Tydfil’s Church since 1968 when the church was de-licensed, meaning it could no longer be used for wedding services. The first wedding to take place since its license was reinstated was Angharad John and Gavin Edwards, with their wedding taking place 25th April 2015.

The Dowlais Male Choir, its musical director and accompanist wish Rebecca and Neil good health and every happiness in their life together.

I will end with an apache blessing used in wedding ceremonies:

“Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter for the other. Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other. Now there will be no loneliness, for each of you will be companion to the other. Now you are two persons, but there is only one life before you. May beauty surround you both in the journey ahead and through all the years. May happiness be your companion and yourdays together be good and long upon the earth.”
