A male voice choir from Merthyr Tydfil will mark their 50th year by taking to the stage at St David’s Hall in Cardiff.

The golden anniversary of Cor Meibion Dowlais will celebrate an outstanding history of celebrity concerts, overseas tours and competition wins.

To mark the special occasion, the choir will raise their voices in song under the direction of conductor Darya Brill-Williams at the Hiraeth Concert on February 14.

The Dowlais men will also be joined by the next generation of male choirs in Only Boys Aloud, under the baton of Tim Rhys Evans.

Hiraeth is a stage performance of music, song and dance which celebrates the culture of Wales.

The performance tells the story of Wales, from Celtic times, through to the birth of Welsh Male Voice Choirs.

It will feature the 64-piece L’Orchestre d’Avergne along with dancers from Auvergne, France.

Cor Meibion Dowlais performed in the first Hiraeth Concert in France over a year ago and are delighted to be reunited with their new-found friends on Welsh soil.

“Hiraeth promises to be a really magical evening where we get to work alongside so many wonderful musicians from Wales alongside our many new-found and talented friends from France,” said conductor Ms Brill-Williams.

“The original concert in France was absolutely spellbinding and without doubt the opportunity to bring a celebration of Welsh music to our nation’s capital in this way will be an incredible success.

“It tells the complete story of the Welsh people, from the original Celts to the Roman invasions, bloodthirsty Norman battles and Tudor times.

“Accompanied by famous anthems of Wales and beautiful instrumental music, it really is a spectacular performance.”

The concert promises a rousing performance of some of Wales’ most famous music, from Cwm Rhondda and Calon Lan, to Men of Harlech and Sospan Fach.

Hiraeth takes place on Saturday, February 14, at St David’s Hall, Cardiff.

Tickets, priced £25 and £20, are on sale from the box office on 029 2087 8444. Proceeds will go towards The Aloud Foundation.
