Dowlais Male Choir have featured on billboards across the valleys to promote the new B&Q store in Merthyr Tydfil

A valleys choir have become the talk of the town after featuring on billboards advertising a new B&Q store.

Dowlais Male Choir were asked to feature in the advert to promote the DIY store, which has re-located in Merthyr Tydfil and will officially open on Friday.

The billboards are scattered around Merthyr and the surrounding valleys and carry the message “Time to sing out loud.”

B&Q have moved their store to the new branch of Cyfarthfa Retail Park – where it has been built half a metre off the ground to protect remains at Cyfarthfa Ironworks.

David Powell, from the choir, said: “A member of staff at the current B&Q store contacted chorister Carl Llewellyn and asked if he and Dowlais would perform at the opening ceremony, which was great.

“A few weeks later, marketing company WCRS contacted the secretary Keith Morgan to arrange a photo shoot for the new opening of the recently moved B&Q in Merthyr and wanted the choir to be the ‘face’ of the new store.

“We thought this was a great PR exercise for the choir and happily took part in a photo shoot at Market Square Church, who as always kindly allowed us to use their church.

“We had photos taken in groups of six which were to be merged into one big choir, and can now be seen on advertising boards around the town and surrounding valleys.”

Friday will see the official opening of the store at 9.30am with a performance from the choir. They will also sing in front of one of the many advertising boards in the town centre.

David added: “The choir will also return to the store on the Saturday morning at 9.30am at for a further performance for those unable to make Friday’s opening.

“It’s a great privilege to be asked to be part of a national campaign for B&Q.”
